Becoming a boss is easy, but becoming a boss who is respected and loved is one big achievement. In the workplace, traits like empathy and benevolence are mostly overlooked, making it more stressful than a person can handle. When was the last time you heard your friend, or anyone you know, praising his boss? That must be difficult to recall because this competitive environment has left everyone on edge. When Russell Ewing said, “A boss creates fear, a leader confidence,” he nailed the motto. A good working environment is not only responsible for the growth of your company but for your mental health too. Leadership qualities do not limit at running a company; a leader knows how to run a company along with the trust, hard work, mutual respect and sensitivity. It is not easy to don the hat of a good boss, but here are the traits you can try to infuse yourself with to be better.

Communicate and Understand

Communication is the key to all problems, and a good boss must be a good conversationalist. To yield more output, one must make sure that he convey his message clearly. Makes sure that his employees know that he’s available whenever crises struck. Apart from being a good conversationalist, he must be a good listener too. He must understand where his employees are coming from and appreciate their new ideas.

Mistakes are Inevitable

The axiom, ‘humans make mistakes’ work wonders here. It is important for you to understand that mistakes are inevitable. It is not only your company which is growing in the process, your employees grow too, and the process of growing is full of learning. In spite of yelling and adopting an environment where workers scare to even drop a pen, encourage them to learn from their mistakes.

Publically Praise, Privately Correct

Praises are like energy potion and they work wonders with workers. Make sure that you praise your employees for their services, they must get full credit for their hard work and time. However, like aforementioned, mistakes are inevitable, and to correct such mistakes, adopt a more strict-yet-understanding method. Give your employee a chance for an explanation, and take measures accordingly.

Respect Individuality of your Employees

Like the fingers of our hand, every individual has his own identity. A good leader must respect the individuality of his employees. They need your guidance, but not your dominance. Understand that their work-ethics are different and they see the world differently. Do not impose your approach or methods on them. Let them try to find their way, and if stuck, help them out.

Good Sense of Humour

The competition is so high nowadays that you live a stressful life 24x7. The deadlines are to be met, new projects are coming your way, your employees are working overtimes to meet the ends—such time takes a toll not only physically but mentally too. It is the responsibility of a leader to lead the way with as minimum stress as possible. A leader with a good sense of humour not only is look up to but is respected for his aplomb.

Show Empathy

Understand and accept that your employees are no robots and they are not living for meeting the dead ends. Personal issues, no matter how much you try, somehow muddle with your professional life. In such circumstances, giving your employee a hard time is the last thing you should think of. Where it might not be possible for you to understand their dilemma, try to be in their shoes. Give them some time off to sort out their problems and try to empathise. It is always about improvement, whether in your work habits or in yourself.
