Artificial intelligence, in today’s world, would amount to everything from Apple’s SIRI to Elon Musk’s automated tesla cars, which give you the option of auto-pilot mode on the road. AI, at the present moment, can do general facial recognition or upgrade the way you search on internet but there are efforts being made that AI is able to perform human tasks with the same level of cognitive ability.
The question that comes forth all the researchers and scientists are first whether the AI is possible to achieve abilities to judge and perform like human beings in the similar evolutionary pattern and the second that if it would be constructive or destructive to our race. Two threats we face from a highly developed AI model is that it works, albeit efficiently, but objectively. With cognitive abilities, humans are also blessed with another evolutionary gift, that is, consciousness.
The researchers mainly worry that whether AI would be equally as conscious while performing actions, because AI’s main principle to succeed is to compete. It annihilates competition to win and achieve the goal, that is its purpose. It is constantly evolving and bettering itself from its competition. Hence, a secondary worry is if this AI is used to do something destructive because then it would find the best way to achieve the destruction levels.
The kind of development in the field of AI which makes us worry about the existence of human kind after them will not be a reality before at least a few hundred years. There are debates that it can either happen in decades or centuries or that it is impossible for machines to achieve that level of cognition. Right now, our main focus is that the development of AI is proceeded with caution, in a way that it covers the pitfalls that we as humans are scared of; it is our first and foremost priority.
In a world where everything is done by machines, is more destructive than a world where machines didn’t exist and humans were close to their animal roots. We have to make sure to build a world where the machines, if so intelligent, are still dependent on the human beings (a high impossibility).
Possible or not, either way, development towards a kind which is intelligent that human beings has to be discussed and treaded on with much thought and detail, because if the most evolved species in the nature could lead to so much destruction in the world, a farther more intelligent one could very possibly bring forth the mythical apocalypse.
