Often there is a tendency to ignore the famous bar of soap and prefer its cousin with a more practical design. Sometimes it is also because we find that bar soap dries the skin. If your skin is dry after showering with soap, it means that you are using an industrial soap or that your cold saponified soap is not rich enough for your skin. Why go for homemade soap, an ancient art?

The ancestor of soap finds its origins 2500 years before our era, in ancient Egypt. At that time, people cleaned themselves with a mixture of potassium carbonate (contained in the ashes) and clay. Later, animal fat is used to make this paste, which has the appearance of mild soap. Despite its cleansing virtues, soap was rejected during the Renaissance and replaced by perfumes and powders. We were satisfied with one or two baths a year, no more. It was in the 13th century when animal fat was replaced by olive oil. In 1791, the chemist Nicolás Leblanc revolutionized soap making by developing caustic soda. Despite this good history, industrialization since the 1950s has robbed cold saponification of its rightful place through the mass production of soaps (with heating) with the most conventional brands, petroleum derivatives, or chemical surfactants mixed with water and synthetic preservatives.

How to make cold soap?

Soap is created when there is a chemical reaction between a basic solution, such as caustic soda or potash mixed with vegetable oils and shortenings. It is called the cold saponification reaction. The cold saponification method is a traditional artisan process that has existed since at least the 17th century. During this reaction, an emollient and moisturizing agent is formed, which is vegetable glycerin. This famous vegetable glycerin is often sold to be reused in other products (especially cosmetics).

However, vegetable glycerin is necessary for soaps to make them as gentle as possible on the skin, otherwise, the skin will remain dry and tight afterward of the shower. The chemical reaction between soda and vegetable oils and kinds of butter and moisture evaporation lasts up to five or six weeks. It is called the cure. Our soaps dry quietly on a shelf throughout this time. You do not face such issues when you use CBD soaps. Is caustic soda dangerous? 

The name "caustic" soda can sometimes suggest that the soap will be harsh on the skin. However, it does not remain dangerous after its reaction with oils. The reaction between the oils and the soda dissolves soda completely at the end of the treatment. Therefore, there is no danger at this level. The manufacturers use a precise calculation to calculate the optimal ratio of soda and oils for a mild soap. Additionally, it is necessary to provoke a chemical reaction at the origin of the cold saponified soap.

Understanding sugars soap

A sugars soap is the percentage of oil or butter added over what is needed to consume soda or potash. The saponification is then partial. For example, in soap with 8% fat, there is 8% more vegetable oil. It means that the result will nourish your skin.

What is the art that is used behind cold soap?

The chemical definition of soap is:

oil + alkaline base = soap + glycerin

But what makes a cold soap unique and irreplaceable is the art of formulation, the alchemy of fats. If any oil or butter can be saponified, the result will not always be the same. The magic of the fatty acids contained in the oils and their balance constitutes the identity of a soap: abundant lather, washing powder, "conditioning" effect (wrap), or stable and soft foam. Thus, olive oil provides incomparable softness and emollience. Cocoa butter contributes to the harshness of the soap and provides protection and softness to the skin. Shea butter, rich in unsaponifiable, nourishes, repairs, and softens the skin. Sacha Inchi oil is an antioxidant, rich in omega 3-6-9 and sterols, soothes, softens, and repairs the skin. Coconut oil adds strength to the soap, giving it a washing and foaming power. Too much soap will be detergent and not very skin-friendly. The choice of unrefined, cold-extracted oils and butter with preserving properties is an incomparable advantage in a soap.
