How to Impress Investors - Points to Remember
"What I've so far -One founder(me) -Business Plan -Finished website design I'm ready to start development on the website but need funds to get the website developed."
Sorry bud! Saying the investors you have an idea for a business plan or website seems very outdated. No disrespect, you have to imagine that an investor sees thousand of good ideas every month. To secure investment for your startup, you need to excite and entice the investors. Here's some quick and easy tips to get the ball rolling:
- Professionalism and seriousness: Arrange a formal meeting with your potential investor. Present yourself in a professional and dignified manner to show that you're serious about this venture.
- Patience: No investor would sit with a pile of money in one hand to hand it over to you. There will be many cups of coffees and many rounds of meeting to fix the deal. He won't price your deal then and there.
- Stroytelling: A study reveals, the most effective way of convincing someone of something is by storytelling. Tell a good story that captivates their attention. It shouldn't be long. You're aren't reading a fairytale to a child.
- Small Pitch: Imagine when somebody asks you to describe your business in a tweet? You should be able to articulate your business in few simple words.
- Give Short Investment Plan: Keep your credible investment plan short and sweet. Investors don't want to read a 50page long business plan. Outline the three main points in your plan - What is the proposition? Who are your customers? What is your USP (unique selling point).
- Show Valuable Product or Service: Show the investors the value of your product or service. They need to know how will they make money with your idea? What will be their incentive to take the risk? How big of a market you could serve and how easy it is go to scale your idea? If they don't find value in your idea, they won't give you money.
- Goal Setting: Be crystal clear about what you're selling and your goals. Sometimes, an entrepreneur is unable to explain about their product or service. Be explicit about your goals. That will instill the confidence of investor in you.
- Good Presentation: Make pretty presentations with visuals. An ideal presentation is of five page and two minutes long. Including images will attract your investors.
- Have Authority: Be authorative of your product. Your product should be independently tested and patented. There should be an expert in your designing team.
- Show Numbers: Show them the numbers invested in your business. To support your financial credibility, an investor should have faith in your business. Get a CAD or a prototype of your product. If it's a service show the amount of money invested to acquire customers.
- Be prepared with answers: Anticipate their questions. Be prepared to answer their questions with a head-on and a good comeback. Provide data if needed.
- Honesty: Be honest with the investors. That will set a right tone of your relationship with him. If you believe in your idea and ability to succeed, there is no room for a lie.
- Respect: Be respectful, personable and kind. Do not be arrogant. Confidence draws the line. Believe in yourself and your startup.
- Graciousness: Be gracious when the investor says "no". It can be frustrating to hear a no but you can gain a lot more by being gracious. The investor may question his decision to pass. He may keep tabs on your startup for the next round.
