How much planning do you do? Have you heard of the 6 P’s? I’d be surprised if you haven’t, but Ill jog your memory anyway. 'Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance'

We often plan in our jobs and in our careers. Planning the next quarter, setting targets, anticipating peaks and slumps. Most of us are pretty good at it, and we know that our careers would fail and falter without it.

So how about our personal lives? I mean, our actual lives should be more important than work right? Family, friends and passion projects?
So why do the majority of us plan our careers down to the finest detail, yet just wing it when it comes to our personal lives? Think how much you could get done! What could you achieve if you treated your personal life with as much respect as you treat your professional life?

Try this little exercise. Grab yourself a pen and a piece of paper. Don’t worry, I’ll wait!

Got them? Good.

In a second, I want you to close your eyes, and take 3 deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth. Once you have done that, I want you to picture, in your mind, a day in the future. A future, where you have what is in your opinion the perfect day. Maybe it is being somewhere with your family, or doing something you love. But picture it in as much detail as possible, imagining the sights, the smells, and how you feel.

Once you pictured it clearly, write it down on the paper, like a diary entry, as if you have just lived that day. For example, it is the 21st of September, 2018, and I woke up in the most beautiful apartment overlooking the sea! I got up and went and did such and such…

Ready for this? Then take your breaths, and go through the process.

Done? How was it?

What you have there is a powerful mental image of where you would like your life to be. And the best bit is, there is absolutely nothing stopping it from becoming a reality! Nothing, except you!

So take that goal, and work backwards. What do you need to achieve to make it a reality? Do you need to cut back on silly expenses that you don’t need? Do you need to be spending more time with your kids to build the relationship you want? Or do you need to set aside some time to finally get those DIY tasks completed?

On a Sunday, write down everything you have to do the following week that is non-negotiable. Then fill in the daily tasks. And then the important tasks. Once you have done this, you will see how much time you have left for the less important tasks. This will help you spend more time working on things that will help move you forward towards your goals, as opposed to wasting time on things that won’t move you forward.

And there you will have the beginnings of a basic plan, that will ensure you are taking steps in the right direction, and will help you lead a happier, more fulfilling life!

Remember the 6P’s!
