Mumbai Dabbawalas to launch their own delivery company

The iconic Dabbawalas of Mumbai are one of the most sought-after when we talk about start ups in India. No high tech gadgetry, no smartphone apps. These dabbawalas are decidedly low tech. They’re all ready to be a formal set up by launching their own delivery company soon. Apart from delivering food, they will also supply organic milk, vegetables and other goods. They also plan to provide logistic support to multi-national companies (MNC’s).

Subodh Sangle, the coordinator of Mumbai Dabbawalas, during his recent visit to Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), “Several MNCs need logistic support from us and most of them do outsourcing. Dabbawalas are well-versed with the geography and their services have met customers' expectations."

The dabbawala culture was established 126 years ago with a soul aim to provide jobs to local youth of rural Mumbai. It was started by Mahadeo Havaji Bacche. Today, they deliver 175,000 to 200,000 tiffins each day through a network of 5000 dabbawalas. Their delivery metrics have found recognition across the world. With Forbes covering them in a detailed article and the President of their association delivering talks at Harvard.

They decided to launch their own company soon after PM Modi launched the ‘Start Up India’ scheme. The announcement comes as a part of their decision to become a bigger brand.

“Their passion and commitment is not about work culture, but because work is worship"   - Pawan Agrawal, who travels globally to speak on Mumbai dabbawalas.
