It is always important to take care of yourself according to all the principles of good health. Regular checkups, good nutrition and healthy living ensure that one can keep abreast of one's health in a careful but reasonable way. Often people worry too much about health problems and get caught up in a cycle of health problems. A health problem is reconciled when another immediately seems to take its place. These worries become overwhelming and exhausting after a while.
Eventually, the individual realizes that this cycle of health problems has affected their quality of life. A dark cloud, always hovering over everyday life, this intrusive form of fear needs to be addressed. One begins by determining why this is happening, what it is for and how to interrupt this behavior.
Reason for health anxiety
Health problems actually have a purpose, and this purpose is not difficult to discover if one looks deeply enough into this pattern of behavior. Often this pattern involves distracting the brain from specific emotions that the individual finds difficult to deal with.
Many emotions are so overwhelming, such as anger, pain, or fear, that the brain looks for ways to distract itself. Health issues qualify because when you're deeply concerned about your health, there's little room to deal with a troubling emotion.
Health issues overshadow all other thoughts and this WORKS. This is the perfect distraction from disturbing emotions. When one concern is reconciled, another takes its place to veil the unaddressed emotion. Every health problem has a strong purpose, as it masks the real distressing emotion, which is much harder to deal with in the long run.
Solutions
- Recognition and acknowledgment of the habit of health anxiety, one worry quickly following another in a perceptible loop that never ends. Awareness of this cycle is always the first step in solving the problem.
- Determine if this health problem is a real physical problem by visiting the GP and ruling out an obvious physical cause of the problem. Always rule out a physical cause before assuming it's just health anxiety.
- Note that these health problems disappear when you become intensely interested in another topic or become involved in a new relationship, job or business.
- Identify your patterns. Are you experiencing a twinge of symptoms that often jump from one part of the body to another? Do you find yourself overestimating physical breaches and immediately concluding that they pose danger or deserve alert attention?
- Find interests that involve your whole being. Lose yourself in things that leave you little time to think about yourself. Real illness does not arise from boredom, as does this behavior. Real health problems generally do not follow the same schedule as health problems. Health problems are strongest in times of boredom and lack of interest. An intelligent mind requires challenges and goals.
- Activity is an important therapeutic tool against health problems. Exercise and movement strengthen and stimulate body and mind in a positive way. Endorphins are released and serotonin levels increase naturally when activity is part of the daily routine. Moderate walking, jogging, tennis, swimming, and dancing are beneficial activities that produce positive results.
Nutrition
Nutrition is also essential for good health, which in itself helps to eliminate the strong habit of negative thinking, often related to health problems. When eaten properly, serotonin levels naturally rise and blood sugar levels remain stable. This helps calm an overactive mind, leading to fewer health problems.
- Talk to your brain by firmly telling it to stop if any health problems occur to you. Switch to a more positive mindset because you always have a choice in what you think.
The mind will respond by calming down as the negative thoughts disappear. The brain, caught red-handed in this behavior, is immediately embarrassed and causes this negative thought cycle to be interrupted. This is similar to a child getting caught with his hand in the cookie jar. The shame of being caught stops this pushy behavior.
- Be aware of 'what if' thinking. If most of the sentences you come up with start with 'what if', this is a sign of strong skill.
